The New Year Journal

Journal Entry: Fri Jan 1, 2010, 12:22 AM
So I'm sitting here, in my bedroom in Tucson, realizing I don't know when the next time I'll see it will be. June is the earliest, but there's a good chance I won't come home next summer. It's a little frightening to think that I don't know when I'll be back, or if I want to be.

I'm sitting here alone, and I'm realizing there are a few people who are really important to me, that I really want to be with right now, and always. One of them is my sister. I really hate that being away from here and the tension and the bad memories means being away from her.

I look back at the past year and realize how much I've grown, but I still feel like such a child. I don't know where I'm headed or what I want, but I know how to move forward and I can keep doing that.

I'm going to try to draw more, to write more, to laugh more, to live more. But I'm going to try to reflect more, to appreciate more, and to slow down sometimes. The world moves faster the older you get, it seems, and there's so much more to miss. I want to try and start journaling every night, or at least every week. I want to start drawing once a week. I want to start photographing once a week. Exercising. Reading. Working hard. I want to push myself like I used to, and get everything I can out of every moment. I want to be proud of myself again, and not just contented.

Overall, I'm feeling a little lost right now, and while I don't necessarily want to feel found, I want to feel like I've got my feet on my ground and an adventure in front of me. I want to just be able to be myself.

But I'm glad for the reflection, and I'm glad for the growth. New Year's has been my favorite holiday for awhile now.

May the days bring you joy, and the year wisdom.

And always, always love.

Taylor

Does anyone know how to open a Photoshop file in Illustrator, or convert it, and still be able to draw on it in Illustrator?

Thanks,

Taylor

Practice Partner(s)? And Contest prizes!

Wed Nov 25, 2009, 7:43 PM
Hey guys--

I am really trying to get myself into a drawing schedule, and to practice my technical skills. Would anyone be interested in making a schedule with me to submit once or twice a week? I figured we could pick a reference picture to draw from, or a theme, or character. It should be really beneficial!

Also, I have not forgotten about you contest winners! It's just been a crazy quarter here at college.

Also, what do you guys think of the new style?

Love,

Tillary

Contest! Edit: Winners! (And one more entry)

Winners!
Honorable Mentions:

Beautiful art, ladies!

Third:
by:iconkeicea:
The design is really unique, and I love how the skin actually matches the trees. I know a lot of thought and planning went into this piece, and it shows.

Second:
Tie between:
by :iconfirefly376:
by :iconskylite-compass:
Both these pieces display great costume design and attention to environment. I feel like the situation and theme were thoroughly explored, and in a way that wasn't necessarily stereotypical. I love the pincer feet and mouse waiters especially.

First:
by :iconradicalbison:
While perhaps not the most flashy of the pieces, I felt this was by far the most creative. Everyday objects have been made enchanting by being a part of a fairy home. The piece also implies the elusive nature of fairies, since s/he isn't home at the time of the photo. This image is positively charming and exceeded my expectations of original.

Everyone be sure to claim your prizes! Participants, remember you get a headshot or chibi!

---

Okay, since a good deal of you showed interest...I will be holding a contest!

The theme shall be Faerie!

I have had a soft spot for fairies and the realms of folklore and magic since I was a little girl, and I am saddened by their recent replacement by video games and vampires. So let's remember our childhoods (or maybe more current fantasies) and make Faerie-themed art! After all, the entire realm of Faerie is born of imagination. For those of you that aren't familiar with it, here are some definitions:

[1] the enchanted realm of fairies
[2] the group containing all mystical, imaginary creatures of folklore and legends
[3] a small, winged creature that lives among flowers and causes mischief

---

Rules

1. Any medium (including prose and poetry) is allowed. This contest is meant to be inspiring, not limiting.
2. Multiple entries are okay, but you can only place once.
3. If anyone would like to collaborate, that is okay by me.
4. If you need clarification on an entry idea/subject/medium/etc., please note me.
5. No gorier/more perverse than PG-13, please.
6. Some part of the image needs to be new. I will be checking that the submission/update of the image is after June 7.

---

Deadline

Let's make this a summer project. Entries will be due July 28. This has been moved back three days so that I can do the judging in time for *vanystisalive to do the features.

---

Judging

For now, I will be the only judge. If there is a tie, or a large number of entries, I will bring in additional judges.

Judging will be based on the following (in order):

Appropriateness: Does it fit the theme?
Creativity: How different is your entry from the others?
Completeness: Does the image/poem/etc. feel like a final product?
Art/Technique: How much control do you have over your medium?

I want this contest to be more about being creative and executing a response to it than pure artistic or literary ability, so keep this in mind when making an entry! I really want everyone to have an equal chance to win, and I believe we all have powerful imaginations!

---

Prizes

I don't have a credit card, so it's going to be gift art. If you are willing to give me an address, I will try and send you a print of your gift art, but it may be delayed until mid-September.

Because we have over ten entries, the winner may also choose two images from my stock of prints, if s/he wishes.

First

3 month journal feature by myself (thumbnails), 1 month by :iconfriesse: (thumbnails), and :iconvanystisalive: (thumbnails)

Second
1 8.5" x 11" image; color style your choice; subject matter your choice; coservative to minimal background; can negotiate sending print
2 week journal feature by myself (thumbnails)), :iconfriesse: (thumbnails), and :iconvanystisalive: (thumbnails)

Third
1 medium image or 3 smalls images; CGed or lightly shaded; subject matter your choice; very minimal background; can negotiate sending print
1 week journal feature by myself (thumbnails)), :iconfriesse: (thumbnails), and :iconvanystisalive: (thumbnails)

Participants

And remember you're icon and a link to your work will be listed in this journal as soon as it is completed!
